OBJECTIVE:

 
Create awarenes and knowledge on emerging diseases  in a changing world and the importance of biotechnology for their control.

EXPECTED RESULTS (specific skills)
After completing this module, the student must show that it is able to:
1. understand the size of the problem and describe the different groups of emerging diseases (infectious, metabolic, genetics etc.)                                                                                                            2. identify the factors (environmental, behavioural, cultural) promoting insurgence and diffusion of emerging diseases both locally and globally.
3. build a clear vision about the potential of biotechnology for the identification of different groups of emerging diseases and how to develop instruments for their control.

METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING / LEARNING

Teaching of the course will be based on lectures, practical laboratory sessions and seminars

STUDENTS EVALUATION
The final assessment of this module will be based on the weighted average of the final exam, of the seminar presentations and  of the practical activities. The evaluation criteria of the module shall comply with the assessment regulations of HCPM.

3. Methods and tools for monitoring emergence and diffusion of new diseases
4. Examples of biotechnological interventions for control of emerging diseases
